Versailles (13-1) Loudonville
(13-1)
Led by Brian Griesdorn's two
touchdowns and an opportunistic defense, the Versailles Tigers roared back from
a 14-point deficit for a 29-26 victory over the Loudonville
Redbirds.
The Redbirds scored on their
first two possessions. Quarterback Jason Beans ended the first drive with
a five-yard touchdown run. Beans capped off the second march by tossing a
52-yard touchdown pass to wingback Matt Quay with 10:05 left in the first
quarter. Pete Brothers kicked both extra points to give Loudonville a 14-0
lead.
Versailles quarterback Lane Knore
began the comeback when he connected with Kennan Leichty on a 62-yard pass to
the Loudonville seven-yard line. Leichty scored two plays later on a
three-yard run. The Tigers tied it at 14-14 when linebacker Griesdorn
intercepted a pass from Beans and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown.
Matt Stall kicked both extra points.
The Tigers captured the lead on a 12-yard scoring pass from Knore to Griesdorn
with 2-22 left in the first half. Stall kicked the extra point to make it
21-14. The Redbirds were shell-shocked.
Loudonville cut the deficit to 21-20 in the third quarter on a 13-yard touchdown
scramble by Beans, but the Redbirds missed the all-important extra point
attempt.
Versailles responded with a
66-yard, 10-play drive capped off by Kevin Bergman's two-yard touchdown run on
the first play of the fourth quarter. A crucial two-point conversion pass
from Knore to Marc Litten gave the Tigers a 29-20 lead.
The Redbirds cut the deficit to 29-26 on a 22-yard
touchdown pass from Beans to Quay, who made a leaping catch over a Versailles
defender. The Redbirds had one more possession, but it ended in
disaster. Three of their final four plays resulted in quarterback sacks by
the fired-up Versailles defense and they were forced to turn the ball over on
downs at their own 20.
Marc Litten led the Tigers' rushing attack with 78 yards in 13 carries.
Quay led the Redbirds with five receptions for 103 yards.
Cheers: "When it was 14-0, I think every player on our team got it
in his heart that we were not gonna go down like this."
Versailles center-lineback-kicker Matt Stall
Tears: "We had a chance to be state champions, but just didn't do
it."
