Dan Schlater
blocked a punt, recorded six quarterback sacks, recovered a fumble, and
caught
a touchdown
pass to lead Versailles to a convincing 28-7 victory over
Wellsville.

second consecutive Division V championship
and 27th straight win. The Tigers also claimed a
third title crown in five years and increased their
playoff winning streak to 12

Versailles jumped on top with a 63 yard drive
capped off by quterback Jason Turner's 15-yard touchdown pass to Schlater. Paul
Risner kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.
Versailles increased the
lead to 15-0 on a one-yard touchdown run by Greg Knapke and a
two-point conversion run by Turner. The
68-yard scoring march was highlighted by Turner's aerial
prowess. He completed 6-of-11 passes
for 87 yards in the first half including a perfect 5-of-5 on
third-down conversions. Schlater hauled
in three first-half passes for 64 yards.
Schlater sealed
Wellsville's fate when he burst through the line to block a punt at
the
Wellsville 14.
The ball bounced to the four-yard line where Aaron Bergman picked it up
and
lumbered into the
end zone. A two-point conversion attempt failed, but Versailles owned a
21-0
lead with 1:11
left in first half.
Wellsville averted a shutout when quarterback
Shawn Carter dashed 88 yards for a touch-
down late in the third quarter. Running the option.
Carter cut back against the defensive pursuit
and sprinted past Versailles' secondary to the end
zone. Bo Carter kicked the extra point to make
it 21-7.
Versailles closed out the
scoring on Risner's three-yard touchdown run in the fourth
quarter.
Risner
booted the extra point to give the Tigers their 28-7 victory
margin.
Led by Schlater, Bergman, Jeff Barga, and Abe
Hoellrich, Versailles' defense held Wellsville
to five first downs, 90 yards rushing, and 127 total
yards. Wellsville tailback Sean Wright, who
entered the contest with 1,821 yards
rushing, was held to eight yards in 10 carries. Versailles
also
